Judging by the success of the Sigma BF, we seem to have a bit of a design-led aesthetic underway at the moment, and the new Viltrox Vintage Z1 taps right into that zeitgeist.
The fact that we seem to be using the word 'zeitgeist' a fair bit at the moment tells us that we're probably moving into a phase where the form of an object is just as important as its function. Even more so in some cases, as high-profile recent releases such as the Sigma BF can attest.
If this brings us kit such as the lovely looking Viltrox Vintage Z1, it's difficult to complain too much though. It weighs just four ounces (116 grams) and features classic-looking mechanical dials and even pebbled leather accents., but it's more than just a looker
The flash features seven power levels, fast 0.2s–3.5s recycle time, and 1/5000s–1/50000s flash duration for nuanced control, sharp results, and creative flexibility. It will provide up to 10,000 flashes on a full charge, with 50-minute USB-C fast charging and sleep mode to balance efficiency and extended use. 28mm wide-angle coverage should provide even illumination for diverse situations, from indoor portraits to street photography.
It comes with a white diffuser to soften its light, "imbuing photos with a smooth, natural, ethereal glow and enhancing clarity and translucency."
In S1 mode, equipped with a built-in optical sensor, the Z1 enables wireless off-camera triggering, supporting multi-light setups for flexible positioning and professional light effects. A S2 mode effectively bypasses pre-flash interference in multi-light setups, ensuring stability throughout the shoot and preventing mistakes at critical moments.
