Insta360 Luna Pro launches in China: single-lens gimbal camera specs confirmed

Insta360's single-lens Luna Pro gimbal camera launched in China on 20 August at ¥3,399, about $500, cutting the Ultra's second lens to reach a lower price while leaving a lot of its core tech intact.

Insta360 has launched the Luna Pro, the single-lens counterpart to its Leica-co-engineered Luna Ultra, which has gone live in China today. Reservations are open through Insta360's Chinese site, though the company has not yet confirmed a global release date or price.

The Luna Pro was first previewed at NAB in April, alongside the Luna Ultra and the Mic Pro wireless microphone, but that early look came with no specs, pricing, or timeline attached. Today's launch fills in the gaps.

It’s interesting to note that Insta360 has gone in the reverse direction to DJI. DJI launched its single lens Osmo Pocket 4 first, following it months later with the Pocket 4P. Insta360, meanwhile, released the Luna Ultra back in June, and is only now making the single lens variant, the standard Luna Pro, available.

The other difference is, of course, that the Luna Pro will make it to the US market unlike the DJI models, though we don’t as yet know when they will arrive. 

Ultra comparison

The Luna Pro keeps a lot of the Ultra’s features. That means the same 1-inch CMOS sensor and Leica Summicron f/1.8 optic (roughly a 20mm equivalent), the same 3-axis mechanical gimbal with FlowState stabilization, and the same detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen remote, which still offers wireless control up to 20 m (66 ft) away.

Insta360 says dropping the telephoto lens cuts both weight and cost without touching the sensor, color science, or stabilization hardware shared with the Ultra. Launch pricing in China is CNY 3399, which in a straight mechanical conversion translates to around $500, though of course, US pricing is yet to be announced. The Luna Ultra currently starts at $769.

Video specs

Video tops out at 8K30, with native vertical 4K30 recording built in for creators shooting for social platforms first. The camera records 10-bit I-Log with up to 14 stops of claimed dynamic range, while stills come in at 37 MP, and a 4x zoom (2x of it lossless) covers closer framing without a second lens. A pair of onboard AI chips power 4K60 night recording and Deep Tracking 5.0, Insta360's latest subject-tracking system.

Four-hour battery

Battery life is rated at roughly four hours from the 1550 mAh cell, with a 23-minute fast charge to 80%. Storage offers 47 GB built in, plus microSD support up to 2 TB. The camera weighs 215 g to 218 g (7.6 oz to 7.7 oz) depending on finish, with the white colorway shown in Insta360's official images and in an unboxing video that surfaced on the company's Weibo account ahead of the announcement.

The camera pairs with iPhone 12 and later running iOS 15 or newer, and with Android devices on a Snapdragon 855 or equivalent chipset.

Insta360 is very much pitching the Luna Pro at everyday creators, vloggers, and travel filmmakers, a step down from the Ultra's professional zoom use case, and as a lower-cost gimbal option in a US market where DJI's Osmo Pocket line has been caught up in import restrictions.
