The latest cinema prime lens from TTArtisan's has what we think might be a unique feature, a switch that enables you to change the style of bokeh.
Differentiating yourself in the lens market is no easy feat at the moment, but TTArtisans seems to have come up with something genuinely new with the TTArtisan 35mm T/2.1 Dual Bokeh Cine Lens; a slider that lets you switch from soft bokeh to bubble bokeh. Two looks in a single lens? That's one for the budget conscious, especially given that the lens only costs $380.
Soft mode and bubble mode both do what it says on the tin. The soft mode supplies a cinematic filter-like effect across the image with a creamy background blur, while the bubble mode concentrates the distinctive bokeh bubbles more in the background and gives everything else a slightly sharper edge.
There are some differences in the way the lens performs in the two modes it is worth considering. In soft mode, the minimum focusing distance is 0.28 meters (0.9 feet), while in Bubble mode, that is 0.55 meters (1.8 feet). Likewise it has different focus throws; 313 degrees in soft mode, and a much more restrictive 131 degrees in bubble mode.
Elsewhere, it gives you 10 Elements in 7 Groups, aperture ranges from T2.1 - T22, it features an 11 bladed aperture, has a 0.8 Mod Gear Pitch, weighs 678 grams (just shy of 24 ounces), and is available in E-, X-, Z-, RF-, and L-mount.
It's also fully manual in terms of aperture and focus. But then, given the price point and the potential creativity it offers, something has to give somewhere along the line.
