Sony's SEL100400 - FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS is a lightweight, 100-400mm zoom that provides a lot of super-telephoto lens for $849.
Following in the wake of the $4299 FE 100-400mm f/4.5 G Master lens, Sony is addressing the other end of the market with the SEL100400, an FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS super-telephoto zoom lens for full-frame Alpha E-mount cameras. It’s not exactly a budget option, coming in at $849, but it’s a lot more affordable and is targeted at roughly the same segment of users, at least as far as basic functionality goes.
The optical design uses two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and two aspherical elements to control color bleeding and distortion across the zoom range. Sony says a 9-blade circular aperture and optimized spherical aberration control produce soft background bokeh. Minimum focusing distance is 0.86 m at the telephoto end and 1.13 m at the wide end, with a maximum magnification of 0.41x.
Despite its 100-400mm reach, the lens weighs approximately 654 g, making it extremely light for its class, and a definite for handheld use. Length is 164.5 mm (6.5 in). Add in the optional SEL20TC 2x teleconverter, reach extends to 800 mm, or 1200 mm in APS-C mode.
Autofocus is driven by a linear motor for fast, quiet tracking, and the lens supports high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to approximately 120 fps on the Alpha 9 III. Built-in optical image stabilization works alongside the camera body's Active Mode stabilization, coordinated image stabilization control, and breathing compensation (on compatible bodies) to reduce blur during handheld stills and video shooting.
Controls include a customizable focus hold button, a focus mode/range switching dial, and a zoom lock switch. The lens has a dust and moisture resistant design, though this is not guaranteed to be 100% effective, and ships with a lens hood to reduce flare and ghosting.
