DJI Osmo Pocket 4P: specs, price and pre-order

DJI has opened pre-orders for the Osmo Pocket 4P in China at CNY 3,799 ($525), confirming the full spec sheet for its dual-lens pocket gimbal. It won't ship to the US, but the closely related XTRA Muse 2 Pro may fill that gap.

DJI has opened pre-orders in China for the Osmo Pocket 4P (the renamed Pocket 4 Pro), the dual-main-camera pocket gimbal camera it first publicly debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May. While an exact Chinese shipping date has yet to be confirmed, and a global one is even more elusive, we now know the full specs and the price: CNY 3,799, which converts into $525.

Of course, the dollar pricing is a moot point as the Pocket 4P will not be made available in the US. It is probably no coincidence then that the XTRA Muse 2 Pro has opened for pre-orders in the US (technically offering 10,000 people early access). XTRA kit has long been believed by many in the industry to be rebadged DJI kit circumventing the FCC Covered List to make its way into the US. Again, there is no ship date and pricing is unconfirmed as well, though XTRA narrows it down slightly to “$6XX.”

Even if that is $699, it will still be less than the Insta360 Luna Ultra, which costs $769. A deliberate undercut? Probably, though it is worth pointing out that at CNY 4,358, the Luna Ultra is also more expensive than the Pocket 4P in China too.

DJI Osmo Pocket 4P full specs

Some of this is known, some confirms rumor, some is new info, but DJI’s Chinese site has now published the full specs of the camera.

The 4P pairs a new 1-inch stacked wide-angle sensor, with a 20 mm equivalent focal length and f/2.0 aperture, with a 60 mm telephoto on a 1/1.28-inch sensor at f/1.8, delivering bokeh equivalent to roughly f/6.3 on full-frame. The wide-angle unit uses LOFIC technology to achieve 17 stops of dynamic range, and both cameras support D-Log 2 and 10-bit color depth. The telephoto offers 3x optical zoom, extendable to 12x hybrid zoom for video and 9x for stills. Electronic shutter reaches 1/16,000 sec.

Video maxes out at 4K240 for slow-motion work. The camera also supports slow-shutter shooting in video mode for light trails and motion blur effects. Stabilization is handled by a three-axis mechanical gimbal, and Smart Follow 8.0 covers full-focal-length follow, multi-person follow, and main-subject follow, with tracking up to 12x zoom.

The 2.0-inch touchscreen runs at 556 × 314 resolution with 1000 nits brightness. Three built-in microphones handle audio. Battery capacity is 1,545 mAh, rated for up to 210 minutes of runtime, with an 18-minute charge to 80% and a full charge in 32 minutes. Storage is 103 GB built-in, with USB 3.1 transferat up to 800 MB/s. The camera also supports WiFi live streaming, webcam use, and in-camera timecode.

Six built-in film tones and real-time skin smoothing and tone adjustment are available on-device; connecting to the DJI Mimo app unlocks additional features and color grading tools. A pearl white color option joins the existing lineup.

An accessories ecosystem covers fill lights, ND filters, a beauty soft light filter, viewfinder remote, wireless microphone, and a battery-life handle.

How does this compare to the Insta360 Luna Ultra?

You can read our full review of the Insta360 Luna Ultra in an hour or so. Our Pocket 4P review will take a bit longer than that, so for the moment we’re mostly comparing spec sheets; a full hands-on comparison will have to wait a week or so.

But what we can say is that there are pros and cons to both choices. On the one hand the Pocket 4P is probably the better pure video tool in several technical respects. It has higher dynamic range, faster slow motion, quicker charging, and more built-in storage.

The Luna Ultra counters that though with 8K resolution, Leica-engineered optics and color science, Dolby Vision, ACES support, and what is no doubt its killer feature: that detachable wireless OLED screen. That genuinely changes how you can frame shots solo.

At $769 it’s also the pricier of the two in the global market, though you can expect the Pocket 4P to cost more than the current CNY 3,799 conversion indicates. $649-$699 would be our guess on the world stage. But, and it is a big but, the Luna Ultra is also available globally including in the US.
