Sony DWT-B40 and DWR-R40Q bring simpler setup to DWX wireless mics

Sony's fourth-generation DWX wireless mic system pairs the DWT-B40 transmitter with the DWR-R40Q receiver, promising simpler setup and built-in backup recording, arriving February 2027.

Sony has launched the DWT-B40 bodypack transmitter and DWR-R40Q rack-mount receiver, the fourth generation additions to its DWX Digital Wireless Microphone Series. 

The new pairing is designed to simplify channel setup for users, theoretically opening up wireless mic use beyond specialist production environments to theatres, opera, musicals and studios of all sizes. 

Sony says that channel frequency configuration and pairing for four channels can be completed with a few button presses, letting users start recording almost immediately.

The DWT-B40 supports a maximum transmission power of 50 mW (output varies by region), enabling stable long-distance transmission without an external power source. It offers selectable audio transmission modes, from low-latency, high-quality settings to modes optimized for maximum reliability in demanding broadcast and sports environments. It can be powered by either a lithium-ion battery (sold separately) or USB, and condenser microphones can be connected directly to it, with +48V phantom power available.

The DWR-R40Q uses improved RF receiving circuitry for stable performance in RF-congested environments, with a 4-antenna diversity mode adding further stability. It supports 4-channel true diversity reception in a 1U chassis, with Dante networking across four output ports for flexible IP-based workflows, while also retaining analog XLR connections for conventional setups.

The DWT-B40 adds internal 32-bit float recording, using Sony's proprietary algorithm, as a backup in case of wireless signal interruption. The format prevents distortion at any gain level. Recording can be started via the transmitter's REC button or remotely from the receiver using Cross Remote control, with timecode synchronization and microSD card data transfer for post-production.
