ASUS ROG and XREAL's $849 R1 AR glasses are aimed squarely at gamers. But their Sony micro-OLED display tech and electrochromic lenses point toward a future that post professionals should be watching.

ASUS ROG and XREAL have opened pre-orders for the $849 ROG XREAL R1, the AR glasses first shown at CES 2026. These are very much aimed at gamers with a $200 markup over the current XREAL One Pro adding a 240 Hz refresh rate and a Control Dock that connects via DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 ports. This supports PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch.

But game-specific though these glasses are, they show the speed of progress in the space and the potential for such kit to impact post workflows. Not everything has to be about the $3499 Apple Vision Pro.

micro-OLED and more

The glasses are built around a 0.55-inch Sony micro-OLED panel running at 240 Hz with a 0.01 ms response time. They project a virtual 171-inch (434 cm) screen at 1920 x 1080 resolution across a 57° field of view. Peak brightness is 700 nits. The XREAL X1 chip provides native three degrees of freedom (3DoF), enabling Anchor mode, which pins the display to a fixed point in space, and Follow mode, which tracks with the user's head movement. Real-time 2D-to-3D conversion is also included.

That Full HD resolution isn't going to sell these glasses into the post community, neither is the design of that dock, but as a flag for the way we're going with the tech, the R1 sets an interesting bar. It also implements some technology that could sit comfortably in a post environment.

Electrochromic lens technology adjusts tint automatically using head-tracking, which is a pretty neat feature especially for those anchored to a desk. Lenses clear when the user looks away from an anchored screen, then darken again when they return their gaze. Three manual tint levels and a one-click instant transparency option are also available. Audio comes via Bose-tuned open-ear speakers. The R1 weighs 91 g (3.21 oz), which is a fraction of the AVP's approximate 600 g (1.32 lb).

The dock also allows keyboard and mouse connection. Direct USB-C connection is also supported for smartphones, tablets, and handheld gaming devices without the dock.

Pricing and availability

The ROG XREAL R1 is available to preorder from Best Buy now, and from the XREAL store. Shipping begins June 1, 2026.
