MagSafe recording from Angelbird and Kondor Blue

1 minute read

This is an interesting wee device for iPhone 15 Pro users, a MagSafe recording module for CFexpress Type B and SD Card.

As more and more people realize that the iPhone 15 Pro’s USB-C connection makes a fairly decent ProRes camera option, so we’re starting to see some interesting gadgetry that aims to make what is still just a smartphone a bit more of a proper option for anyone used to actual filmmaking tools.

The new MagSafe Recording Module, which is available now for pre-order at $99 and developed by LA-based Kondor Blue and Austria’s AngelBird, is a case in point. The Module provides a safe and easy way to mount external Flash storage and is fully compatible with MagSafe phones and cases. The magnet connection is strong and the rubber pads provide additional friction to keep the module in place while avoiding any damage to the iPhone’s glass back. The module can also be mounted via ¼”-20 on the back and has male/female ARRI style 3mm anti-twist options.

All of which means that it isn’t just limited to iPhone usage. The 65g/2.3 oz unit can also be used with any USB-C recording-capable camera. The module also doubles as a card reader when offloading your footage. For rigging, the Cold Shoe ARRI Mount Adapter makes for a solid and simple way to attach the module to your camera.

External recording is up to 4k 60fps on CFexpress Type B Media, while for the SD card flavour you just want to make sure your card can record up to 220MBps for full compatibility.

Two colours are available: space grey or raven black. The module includes a 5” USB-C 3.2 right angle to straight angle cable and a 3-year warranty. Have a look below (and kudos to Kondo Blue for the opening sequence).
