Insta360's Luna Pro is now available worldwide from $599.99, and unlike DJI's rival Osmo Pocket, it's officially on sale in the US.

After launching in China last month, Insta360 has now announced the global release of Luna Pro, the latest camera in its Luna Series of gimbal cameras co-engineered with Leica.

As ever, some detail that was not available at the time of the Chinese release has come to light with the global rollout. Not least of all is the price. Pricing starts at $599.99 (UK £469, Europe €529), with regional pricing varying by market. This is quite in advance of the $499 figure that a straight conversion from the Chinese price suggested, and contrasts with the $769.99 of the Luna Pro Ultra.

It’s also roughly $120 more than the DJI Osmo Pocket 4, which is its closest rival and currently available (in Canada at least) for $477. However, the Insta360 unit is also officially available in the US, which is a huge differentiator all of its own.

For those that have a choice, we've put a quick comparison table below.

Leica lens

The Luna Pro pairs a Leica Summicron lens (F1.8, 20 mm equivalent) with a 1-inch 8K sensor that provides 14 stops of dynamic range. A Dual AI Chip architecture, combining a dedicated imaging chip with a 4 nm flagship chip, handles processing for the camera's imaging and tracking features, including 3-axis stabilization, Deep Track 5.0, Rapid Focus, Group Tracking, and Auto Tracking.

It records 8K Dolby Vision video, native 4K30 vertical video with 6K oversampling, and slow motion up to 4K120 or 1080p240. Zoom options include 4K Clarity Zoom (2× lossless) and 4× HighRes Zoom, with AI enhancement to preserve detail at higher zoom levels. A dedicated portrait mode shoots 80 mm-equivalent stills and 4K60 portrait video, with Advanced Beauty Mode smoothing skin and brightening complexions in-camera.

Detachable screen

Battery life is rated at up to 4 hours, though it’s worth pointing out that it actually has two batteries: a 1550 mAh one for the gimbal, and a 210 mAh for the detachable touchscreen. Either way, a fast charge cycle takes 23 minutes. It also includes 47 GB of built-in storage plus microSD support to 2 TB, and it connects directly to the Insta360 Mic Air and Mic Pro.

Luna Pro weighs 215 g (7.6 oz) in Cosmic Black or 218 g (7.7 oz) in Stellar White.

For post-production, Luna Pro records 10-bit I-Log with 14 stops of dynamic range and ACES workflow support, and built-in timecode syncs footage across multiple cameras and integrates with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.

All in all, it's a powerful unit, and finally we have the complete fourth generation of both the single and dual-lens gimbal cameras available from Insta360 and DJI. It's been a bit of a journey this year, with staggered release dates and even staggered embargoes drip feeding new features into the public arena. Time to take stock, make choices (geography depending), and hope that with the next generation things are perhaps a bit more straightforward...
