The new Hasselblad X2D II 100C is billed as the first 100MP medium format camera with true end‑to‑end HDR image processing. It also finally adds continuous autofocus to the company's cameras.

Quite a few decent new innovations have made their way onto Hasselblad's new X2D II 100C, but we'll start with the HDR imaging pipeline as the company is billing that as a world's first for a medium format camera.

HDR Pipeline

HDR images are processed in-camera as HDR HEIF or Ultra HDR JPEG and can be instantly reviewed on the new 3.6-inch OLED touchscreen, which is 75% brighter than the previous model to make the most of it, running at up to 1400 nits peak brightness. Using the company's Phocus Mobile 2 companion app, users can edit HDR images and apply HNCS HDR processing to RAW files.

Continuous Autofocus

For users, the introduction of AF‑C continuous autofocus is probably the biggest draw. Long-awaited to say the least, this is supported by deep learning algorithms and features LiDAR‑assisted focusing, expanded PDAF coverage (from 294 to 425 zones over the first generation), and a new AF illuminator for improved low-light focusing as well as a self‑timer indicator.

Stabilisation

A 5-axis, 10-stop in-body stabilisation system delivers up to eight times the stability of the X2D 100C when capturing distant subjects. "Users can now capture handheld long exposures lasting several seconds without a tripod, unlocking new creative possibilities," reckons the company.

16-bit Color

The camera is based around an enhanced 100-megapixel medium format BSI CMOS sensor, which provides 16-bit colour depth delivering approximately 281 trillion colours. A new native ISO of 50 and an increased dynamic range of 15.3 stops provide precise control which should stretch comfortably from deep shadows to the bright highlights.

Storage & Ergonomics

Elsewhere, you get 1 TB of internal SSD storage alongside a CFexpress Type B slot, a new graphite grey matte coating, and a 7.5% weight reduction over the Hasselblad X2D 100C.  A newly added 5D joystick enables swift focus point selection and intuitive menu navigation, while you also get eight customisable buttons to play with. The OLED touchscreen has a range from 90° up to 43° down

XCD 2.8–435–100E zoom

Alongside the new camera, Hasselblad has also introduced the XCD 2.8–4/35–100E zoom lens. With approximately 3× optical zoom, it delivers a 28–76 mm full-frame equivalent focal length and an aperture range of f/2,8 to f/4, "effectively combining the range of seven Hasselblad prime lenses into one," says the company.

It features the fastest stepping motor in the XCD lineup, ensuring swift autofocus when paired with the X2D II 100C, and has an optical design comprising 16 elements in 13 groups, including three aspherical and five ED elements, ensuring sharp resolution and authentic colour.

Pricing and Availability

The Hasselblad X2D II 100C is priced at $7399 / €7200. The XCD 2,8–4/35–100E lens is priced at $4599 / €4800. Both are available with immediate effect.
