Godox MA5R review: RGB light meets power bank
3:35

Godox's MA5R packs full RGB lighting and a 4900 mAh wireless power bank into a MagSafe-compatible panel. At $49, it's a practical companion for mobile creators.

There's a growing category of ultra-compact LED panels aimed squarely at smartphone shooters, and the Godox MA5R sits at the more considered end of it. It's a 5 W full-RGB panel with a magnetic wireless power bank on the reverse — essentially two useful things in one slim package, priced at $49.

Here's my video review. Text review carries on after the Key Specs.

MagSafe attachment

The MA5R measures 107 × 68 × 13 mm (4.21 × 2.68 × 0.5 in) and weighs 164 g, putting it roughly on par with a modern smartphone. It snaps magnetically to the back of a phone via a MagSafe-compatible attachment and can be controlled via onboard buttons, Bluetooth, or NFC through the Godox Light app. This is quick to pair and straightforward to navigate.

On the lighting side, colour temperature runs from 1800 K to 10,000 K, with full RGB and 0–100% dimming. CRI is rated at 95, TLCI at 97. These are respectable figures for a light at this price. Fourteen built-in effects cover the usual range of candlelight, fireworks, and similar scenarios.

A secondary selfie light on the reverse operates from 2800 K to 6500 K at 0.8 W. Runtime at full brightness is rated at 220+ minutes from a 90-minute charge.

The power bank function uses a 4900 mAh cell. It cannot charge the phone simultaneously while the light is running, and shouldn't be thought of as a primary power source. But for a top-up when you need it, it's a practical bonus.

Diffuser and mounting

The diffuser included in the box softens output effectively, but adds bulk that makes the phone-attached configuration awkward to hold. In practice, it works better without it.

The main omission for the light is standard mounting. There's no cold shoe, 1/4-20 thread, or other attachment point, which limits the MA5R to phone-mounted use only. The ability to place it on a small stand as a practical source would have made a stronger product.

Overall: Five watts earn their place

godox ma5r review mainAs a light source, the MA5R is best understood as a fill, accent, or face light rather than a key. Five watts won't carry an interview, but in darker environments — events, behind-the-scenes shooting, social content on the move — it earns its place. The wide colour temperature range means it can be tuned to blend with or counterpoint ambient light, which is genuinely useful.

Pricing and availability

Available in six colors (black, white, red, blue, green, pink), the Godox MA5R is available worldwide at $49 or equivalent. The Godox Light app is free on iOS and Android.
