DJI Osmo Pocket 4 Pro: dual cam, 3x zoom, 17 stops?

DJI confirmed the Osmo Pocket 4P at Cannes on Thursday. Dual cameras and 3x optical zoom are locked in. Almost everything else, including pricing and full specs, is not.

In the end, to be honest not much happened. We knew that the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P was going to be unveiled at the Cannes Film festival on May 14, we knew there was an impressive list of filmmakers and DoPs lined up for the event, and we knew the tagline 'New Frame. New Masterpiece' indicated that the company is very much targeting high-end tools.

But beyond all that, we weren't told much at all. Another tagline for the 4P, 'See More. Tell More', failed to deliver on both counts. The event was all very glossy, no doubt all very glamorous, but in terms of adding any meat to the bones of what we already knew, it was a bit of a damp squib. The PR released after the event didn't even mention that the new gimbal had a dual camera system, it was that vague.

DJI Osmo Pocket 4P Preview at Cannes

"Built upon DJI's legacy in professional cinematography, including its industry-defining DJI Ronin and DJI Inspire platforms, the Osmo Pocket 4P represents the convergence of high-end film technology and extreme portability," said the statement. "Featuring a next-generation imaging system, the Osmo Pocket 4P delivers cinematic-level dynamic range for rich tonal depth alongside 10-bit D-Log2 color performance that enables professional color grading workflows. Combined with DJI's advanced stabilization expertise, the device brings professional cinema capabilities into a truly pocket-sized form factor, empowering creators to capture stories with unprecedented flexibility."

Six things we now know about the DJI Pocket 4P

So, in concert with the teaser video from earlier this week, this is what is confirmed.

1. The name is confirmed as the DJI Pocket 4P and not the Pocket 4 Pro. This is the same naming system the company has just used with the release of the Osmo Mobile 8P, and seems to be DJI's new pattern.

2. A 3x optical zoom as part of a dual-lens setup is confirmed. No doubt digital zoom further extends that, but this is a significant new addition to the overall gimbal camera ecosystem.

3. The 4P has a variable aperture f/1.7–f/2.8 on the primary lens rather than the fixed aperture of the Pocket 4.

4. A 1-inch sensor is also confirmed. This is the same as the Pocket 4 and the Pocket 3 before that. It is also reportedly the same spec as the forthcoming Insta360 Luna Ultra dual camera gimbal.

5. DJI has also confirmed a 2-inch rotating touchscreen and ActiveTrack 7.0 subject tracking. This is the same tracking system that ships on the standard Pocket 4.

6. It is now likely to be on sale in June as DJI operates a fairly compressed launch playbook.

Three unconfirmed rumors

1. We take this one with a pinch of salt because it really would be something quite spectacular, but multiple sources are now confidently saying that the Pocket 4P will feature 17 stops of dynamic range.

2. 6K60 video vs 4K240 on the Pocket 4.

3. Slightly larger storage (128 GB) and a bigger battery 2000 mAh over the Pocket 4's 1545 mAh cell has been indicated.

These would be fabulous if true, especially that headline 17 stops, and would justify the also rumored $200 mark up over the standard model. But we will have to wait for a more informative event than the Cannes launch to find out.
