Ahead of his review video on the DJI Osmo Action 6 , Simon Wyndham gives his quick take on the camera's variable aperture feature.

The DJI Osmo Action 6's variable aperture is, along with its square sensor, one of the standout features of the new camera. But it's possibly worth talking about it a little more as, while it is adjustable to a degree, it's not so in the same way as you'd set the iris on a stills camera.

"When the designers were putting the Osmo Action 6 together, they wanted to use a larger sensor, Simon Wyndham explains. "The problem...is that larger sensors can compromise close-focus performance in action-camera scenarios where you typically need it. The usual workaround is to stop down, but stopping down removes the low-light benefits of having a larger sensor in the first place."

The variable aperture solves that quandary. And you can hear Simon explain more about it in the video below (and anyone that wants to dive even deeper is further directed to the pinned comment under the video on YouTube that explains even more).
