The brightest ultra-wide-angle interchangeable lens it's ever produced, Canon's new RF 14mm F1.4 L VCM Prime Lens provides ultra-wide angle views with a fast f/1.4 aperture.
Effectively, the new RF 14mm F1.4 L VCM Prime Lens updates the legacy of the well-regarded EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM. It's now the sixth lens in the hybrid-oriented f/1.4L VCM prime series, and provides ultra-wide angle views as well as controlled distortion and rectilinear characteristics from the center ouro to the edges of the image.
Wide Appeal
It's pretty much designed for pro still photographers capturing landscape, astro (see video below), and starscape imagery, as well as architectural and real estate shooters, but Canon also throws videographers and time-lapse creators as target markets into the mix there as well. So, not everybody, but a lot of people.
It is one stop faster than the EF 14 mm f/2.8. Dual VCM (Voice Coil Motor) focusing supports autofocus for stills and video, with focus breathing specified at 3.0% (2.3% when stopped down to f/20).
Size and Optics
The lens measures 4.4 in (112 mm) in length by 3.0 in (76 mm) in diameter and weighs 1.27 lb (576 g). This aligns it nicely in size, weight, and design with the rest of the RF F1.4 L-series primes (currently 20 mm, 24 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm, and 85 mm).
All in all it has 18 elements arranged across 13 groups and the optical design includes Canon’s first use of a fluorite element in an ultra-wide-angle lens, along with BR Optics, one UD element, and three GMo aspheric elements, with sub-wavelength coating applied in one location and Air Sphere Coating in two to reduce ghosting.
An 11-blade aperture is used for out-of-focus rendering. The lens includes an iris ring compatible with EOS R1, EOS R5 Mark II, and EOS R6 Mark III, as well as a Lens Function button and a Control Ring.
One potential caveat is that due to its size there are no attachment threads for filters at the front of the lens. There is a holder at the rear for inserting one polyester or gel filter, but this has to be cut to size by the user.
Pricing and Availability
The Canon RF 14mm F1.4 L VCM prime lens is currently expected to be available by the end of February 2026 for $2599.
