Canon releases RF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 globally, but USA has to wait

The Canon RF 75-300mm F4-5.6 is a new compact and lightweight 4x telephoto zoom lens aimed primarily at entry level EOS R users who are looking for zoom on a budget.

There's an element of nostalgia surrounding the newly launched  RF 75-300mm f/4-5.6, a compact telephoto zoom for EOS R System cameras. PetaPixel is one of several sites to pick up that its spec is effectively based on the standard EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III, which was released all the way back in 1999.

This will partly help explain its competitive pricing, which comes in at around the local equivalent of $385. Good luck getting it in the USA, however, as the lens is not currently being released there. Along with everyone else we'll assume that's something to do with the ongoing tariff situation and might change in the future.

Key features

  • Variable maximum aperture of f/4–5.6

  • 13 optical elements in 9 groups

  • 7-blade circular aperture for smooth bokeh

  • Minimum focusing distance of 1.5 meters at 300mm

  • Lightweight and compact design (507g, 146.1mm length / 17.9 oz, 5.75 inches)

  • DC autofocus motor for fast, accurate focusing

  • Super Spectra coating to reduce flare and enhance contrast

  • 58mm filter thread

Basically taking the old lens and retooling it with an RF mount is a quick and easy way for Canon to fill a gap in the bottom end of the RF lineup. It's going to work equally well with ASP-C and full-frame cameras too (delivering a roughly 120-480mm focal length on ASP-C units thanks to the crop factor).

Pricing and availability

The lens will be available at the end of May worldwide, but not so far in the USA. Regional pricing we've seen to date includes £289, €319, and AUS$399
