In this week's RedShark Interview podcast episode, Chris Wells delves into the layered, lived-in world of The Wheel of Time with veteran production designer Ondřej Nekvasil.
His IMDB is impressive, having worked on films like Snowpiercer and The Illusionist, Ondřej unpacks the immense creative challenge of physically building a fantasy world from the ground up in Amazon's fantasy adaptation.
One of the core philosophies behind The Wheel of Time’s design was cultural fusion. 'It's a multicultural world which is really created by the different cultures, not only in the visual part, but also in that philosophy.' Ondřej explains. Villages may look Alpine at first glance, but details reflect a society shaped by centuries of travel and mingling.
Designing the iconic White Tower required a different touch. 'We imagined it being built over centuries,' Ondřej notes. Instead of uniform architecture, different parts of the tower reflect the periods and cultures that contributed to its creation, an 'additive design.'
For the final section, they dive into Ondřej’s work on Bong Joon-ho’s cult sci-fi thriller Snowpiercer, a project defined by its tight deadlines, intense world-building, and behind-the-scenes challenges, including infamous meddling from Harvey Weinstein.
