Tamron has completed its G2 Trinity of zoom lenses (named Daisangen after a high-value mahjong hand) with the introduction of the 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 wide-angle zoom full-frame lens.
This compact wide-angle zoom lens is built for full-frame mirrorless cameras that support Sony E or Nikon Z mounts. All three of the G2 zoom lenses are ideal for both video and stills.
The Tamron 16-30mm G2 is a wide-angle zoom lens with high resolution while still rendering bokeh in images. The lens is fairly quick at f/2.8 throughout the entire zoom range, plus it has a minimum aperture of f/16. The lens also features 16 elements in 12 groups and 9 aperture blades (circular dialogue). Smooth and quiet autofocus is powered by the VXD linear motor (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive).
Additionally, there is a maximum diameter of 74.8mm, filter size of 67mm, an angle of view of 107°2′- 71°35′, a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.4 (wide) and 1:7 (tele), and a minimum object distance of 0.19m (7.5 in.) at wide and 0.3m (11.8 in.) in tele. Lens functions can be customized via the Tamron Lens Utility software. Supported mounts include Sony E and Nikon Z.
The lens is a bit compact, making it easier to carry. Depending on the mount, the lens is 4 in. (101.8mm) in length (Sony E) or 4.1 in. (103.9mm, Nikon Z). It weighs 15.5 oz (440g, Sony E) or 15.9 oz. (450g, Nikon Z).
The 16-30mm joins two other G2 full-frame zoom lenses, including the 28-75mm f/2.8 and 70-180mm f/2.8. That’s a nice and complete set of zoom lenses with wide-angle, standard, and telephoto options. The other lenses have many of the same features and are also compact and easy to carry.
