Sony is finally launching CFexpress 4 compatible CFexpress Type A cards for its Cinema Line and Alpha mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, along with the MRW-G3 CFexpress Type A card reader.
The new CEA-G Series CFexpress 4-compatible CFexpress Type A cards achieve read speeds exceeding 1800 MB/s, more than twice as fast as earlier models, max write specs of 1700 MB/s, and provide a storage capacity of up to 1920 GB.
Sony is a bit late to the CFexpress 4 party, but better late than never (though, as it points out, as of July 2025 there are still no Sony cameras compatible with the CFexpress 4 standard. When using native CFexpress 4 cards, rather than these compatible ones, operation will be at CFexpress 2 standard).
The new cards are available in 960 GB (CEA-G960T) and 1920 GB (CEA-G1920T), and follow the VPG400 standard required for professional video recording. They also feature the TOUGH specification with approximately 5 times the drop resistance and 10 times the bend strength compared to standard CFexpress Type A cards , with boosted dust and water resistance (IP57), temperature resistance, X-ray resistance, anti-static, and UV resistance, making them usable in harsh environments.
Alongside the new cards is a new card reader. The MRW-G3 offers high-speed data transfer with CFexpress 4 and USB 40Gbps support, and features heat dissipation design to handle temperature increases during large file transfers, achieving high reliability and durability.
Pricing and availability
The 960 GB card will retail for approximately $584 and while the 1920 GB card is priced at $949. The MRW-G3 memory card reader will cost $149. All three new products are expected to be available by August.
