Sony has just announced the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM macro lens and it lays a serious claim to being the company's best macro lens to date.
The first medium telephoto macro lens in the G Master series and compatible with Sony Alpha E-mount cameras, the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM features 1.4x magnification, advanced stabilisation, intuitive handling, and on paper is looking like an all-round winner.
Optical Design and Functions
There's definitely a lot to like about the new Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM. As part of the G Master range it features some of Sony's best optical technology in a 17-Element and 13-Group design, including two XA elements. These combine with two ED elements to achieve high-resolution performance from the centre to the periphery of the image, which should reduce chromatic and other aberrations.
An optional teleconverter helps the lens offer up to 2.8x magnification. This enables close-up shots while keeping a comfortable working distance, and is ideal for subjects that are hard to approach or for avoiding unwanted reflections.
The lens offers three focus-dedicated features: a Full-time DMF switch that enables instant manual focus (MF) by rotating the focus ring, even in AF mode; a Focus Mode switch allows instant switching between AF and MF; and a Sliding Focus Ring enables full MF control, linked to the distance and magnification scales. A dedicated aperture ring offers quick, direct control over aperture settings.
Motors & More
Four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors enable high-speed, high-precision and quiet lens drive, making AF performance up to approximately 1.9 times faster than previous models, in this case the decade-old (and much admired) FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS.
An 11-blade circular diaphragm should help produce smooth bokeh, with spherical aberration controlled to balance resolution and background blur. The lens also features Sony's Nano AR Coating II to reduce flare and ghosting in backlit situations.

An integrated optical image stabilisation system specifically designed for macro photography should accurately compensate for shift shake, angular shake, and front/back shake, ensuring steady handheld shots, which is a definite useful feature to have on a macro lens.
Finally, the FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM weighs 1.4 lb / 646 g, and is 81.4 x 147.9 mm / 3.2 x 5.8 inches.
Pushing the Boundaries
“We’re on a constant mission to push the boundaries of creative possibilities for visual storytellers, and the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS is a testament to that commitment, transcending the limits of traditional macro photography,” said Jazz Sidharh, Lens and Peripheral Marketing Manager, Sony Europe B.V. “With its world-class optics, this new lens elevates not only macro, but also portrait and wedding photography. We’re thrilled to offer the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS as part of our acclaimed G Master series, delivering the peak performance Sony creators have become accustomed to and rely on to further their craft.”
