Sigma claims that the lens marks a new chapter in its Art line of lenses. At a maximum aperture of f/1.4 and an 85mm focal length it will certainly appeal to those who love ultra shallow DOF effects.

The body is dust proof and splash proof, and Sigma claims to have performed numerous rounds of raytracing in order to assure the final design of minimal ghosting, even in backlit conditions.

Weight, too was a primary consideration, with the new lens weighing in at 630g, a filter size of 77mm and a body length of 94.1mm. It is far smaller than the 85mm DG HSM model that it replaces.

The AF system stepping motor has been optimised for use with both phase detection and contrast detection systems. Sigma also states that by making the most of modern cameras abilities to correct for aberration electronically, it was able to focus the design on correcting issues that can only be solved optically.

Other features of the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art lens

Other features include an Iris ring lock switch and an AFL button that lets functions to be assigned from the camera body. But most interestingly is a switch that turns off iris clicks, allowing totally smooth exposure operation during video use.

Construction is with 15 elements in 11 groups, and an 11 blade aperture.

Sigma has made a video demonstrating its autofocus speed with eye detection below.
