Saramonic SG MS1 mid-side shotgun mic: specs, price and output modes

Saramonic has launched the SG MS1, a mid-side stereo shotgun microphone with three output modes and adjustable stereo width, priced at $350.

Saramonic's new SG MS1 is an ultra-compact stereo condenser shotgun microphone using a mid-side (M-S) capsule configuration, combining a cardioid capsule with a bi-directional (figure-8) capsule for stereo imaging. This usefully means it can capture both the intended subject and ambient sound at the same time without having to do two separate recordings.

The microphone offers three selectable output modes: decoded L/R stereo, raw M-S stereo, and M/S mono (switchable between cardioid and bi-directional polar patterns). Raw M-S output is available via XLR for further processing in post-production. Decoded L/R output converts the M-S signal to standard stereo channels in real time, suited to ENG, broadcast, and fast-turnaround workflows. M/S mono mode offers cardioid for dialogue and point-source recording, or bi-directional for two-person interviews.

Frequency response is 20 Hz–20 kHz. Stereo width, output mode, and gain can be adjusted via the Saramonic System app, which also provides real-time level monitoring.

Connectivity includes USB-C, XLR (via a 5-pin breakout cable), and 3.5 mm TRS. The mic can be powered by 48 V phantom power, USB-C, or its built-in battery, rated for up to 5 hours of use.

The SG MS1 measures 15 cm (5.9 in) and weighs 91 g (3.2 oz), with an all-metal housing.

It ships with a lot you need to get up and running right out of the box too, including a very visible shock mount, USB-C to USB-C cable, 5-pin XLR breakout cable, USB-C to Lightning cable, 3.5 mm TRS cable, 3.5 mm TRS to TRRS cable, foam windscreen, fur windshield, two thread adapters, a hex key, a protective silicone plug, and a carrying case.
