Polar Pro admits that its new Center Split Filter is a niche tool, but if you're after a unique filter for a standout sequence this could be the one.

Designed, according to the company, for filmmakers and photographers looking to push the boundaries a bit, the Polar Pro Center Split Filter keeps your subject sharp in the center while blooming highlights and diffusing detail above and below.

Split Options

The center-sharp, top/bottom diffused split-field effect definitely conveys an interesting look, and one that Polar Pro says is difficult to achieve in post. The lens uses PolarPro’s Cinema Series optical glass with anti-scratch, anti-reflective, and low-dispersion properties. Multi-layer coatings reduce glare and maintain color neutrality, and the CNC-machined aluminum frame has a matte black anodized finish.

Polar Pro says that the fixed optical split it provides is 'bold' at wider focal lengths, and dials in more subtlety as longer focal lengths are used. Certainly in the video above, which was shot in the Utah desert with filmmaker Nathan McBride, the effect looks to run the whole gamut from pleasing to frankly a bit over the top.

At least you know the filter can handle a bit of dust...
