Sigma introduced its newest Art lens, a $919 fast and wide-aperture 17-40mm F1.8 DC, aimed at APS-C mirrorless cameras. It builds upon the 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art lens, which debuted over a decade ago. It was the first F1.8 zoom lens for both video and photo.

The Art line of lenses from Sigma are known for its quality construction and visuals while maintaining an affordable price point. There are a variety of focal lengths, from wide to telephoto, plus macro and fisheye, both prime and zoom, and for full frame and APS-C camera sensors.

Details - Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art Lens

The new 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art Lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras features a constant F1.8 throughout the entire zoom range, with a minimum aperture of F16. The lens has 17 elements in 11 groups (4 SLD glass, 4 aspherical elements) plus 11 aperture blades.

Meanwhile, the Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting, while the high-precision aspherical lenses promise to deliver high resolution and contrast. The lens is both dust- and splash-resistant.

It features an HLA motor (High-response Linear-Actuator), which is Sigma’s proprietary linear motor, for silent and more precise focusing and minimal focus breathing. The minimum focusing distance is 11.1 in. (28cm). There is an internal zoom plus an aperture ring (or Canon RF control ring) with an aperture click switch and ring lock switch and an AFL button in two locations. With the L-Mount option, you can switch between linear and non-linear focus.

The Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art lens debuted in 2013, and the newest lens builds upon that legacy. One of the biggest new features of the 17-40mm is the weight, which is 30% lighter than the 18-35mm at 18.9 oz. (535g) with the L-Mount.

Additionally, the lens size is on the compact side at 2.9 in. x 4.6 in. (72.9mm x 115.9mm) for the L-Mount, making it easy to transport and use. The size and weight vary a little, depending on which mount is chosen. The inner zoom keeps the lens length the same.

Mounts include Canon RF, FUJIFILM X, L-Mount, and Sony E and Sigma does offer a Mount Conversion Service. The L-Mount version of the 17-40mm F1.8 DC is compatible with Sigma's USB Dock UD-, which is sold separately.
