GDU unveils Matte Box Hanger System and other accessories for RED

2 minute read

Some excellent looking new accessories for the KOMODO, KOMODO-X, and V-RAPTOR are headed by the Quantum Matte Box Hanger System.

RED owners rejoice! GDU has unveiled some nice new accessories for the KOMODO, KOMODO-X, and V-RAPTOR: A matte box hanger system, monitor mount, rods and adaptor, and more. And, of course, what makes GDU (Global Dynamics United) so unique for RED cameras is that it’s co-owned by two key RED figures, President Jarred Land and Chief Design Officer Matthew Tremblay.

The Quantum Matte Box Hanger System is built for RED camera and is to be used with the Mirage Matte Box from Tilta (not included). It includes 15mm rods (available in 4, 6, 9, and 12 inch sizes), 6 GDU Micro Wing Nuts, a Quantum 15mm LWS Side Rod Adaptor, and 4 Toolless Thumbscrews.

The GDU Universal Monitor Mount works with the two KOMODO cameras and the V-RAPTOR, and attaches to the top. It allows for a good range of motion (pivot and rotate) so you can move the monitor if need be. It will work with other cameras, not just RED.

The Mighty Mount includes a Micro Adaptor, pivots and rotates, and easily disconnects. You can clamp it onto a 15mm rod and it can be extended for more length with other 15mm rods.

Another new GDU product is the 15mm LWS (Lightweight Studio) Side Rod Adaptor, compatible with the KOMODO or V-RAPTOR. It accepts 15mm rods (hence the name) and connects to one side of the RED camera or the other.

GDU has manufactured their products with machined aerospace-grade aluminum, making them tough and perfect for any conditions, especially when filming outdoors.

Given than GDU is co-owned by RED President Land and Chief Design Officer Tremblay, it’s no surprise the design of the accessories complement the RED camera designs so well.

They each have that rugged yet refined look that made RED famous over 17 years ago when they made their big splash at the 2006 NAB Show. These aren’t just ‘run of the mill’ accessories; they look like they’re built for RED cameras. And the good news is, they work with other cameras, too.

Pricing and availability

The new GDU accessories are available now, including the GDU Quantum Mattebox Hanger System will set you back $575 (to start), and that doesn’t include the Tilta matte box.

Meanwhile, the GDU Universal Monitor Mount starts at $225, the GDU Mighty Mount starts at $149, and the GDU Ultralite 15mm Rods cost $68 each. Finally, the LWS Side Rod Adaptor costs $155.

There are a pair of kits available that don’t include the Quantum Matte Box Hanger System, but both have enough to get you started. The GDU KOMODO + KOMODO-X Quantum Rig Monster Kit costs $1299, while the GDU RAPTOR Monster Kit is priced at $1599.
