Samsung Unpacked 2026: Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra adds a 200 MP camera

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra headlines Unpacked 2026 with a 200 MP camera and 8K APV video. The standard Fold 8 and Flip 8 get more modest sensor bumps.

While an Apple foldable still maybe waits in the wings two years down the line, Samsung used its July Unpacked event in London to refresh its foldable line. Three new foldables arrived: the Galaxy Z Fold 8, a new flagship-tier Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8. There were also two new smartwatches and Samsung's first pair of smart glasses, but for anyone shooting stills or video on a phone, the Fold 8 Ultra is the main news. The standard Fold 8 and Flip 8 get sensible but unremarkable sensor bumps.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra

The Fold 8 Ultra is Samsung's thinnest foldable yet, measuring a mere 4.1 mm (0.16 in) unfolded and 8.9 mm (0.35 in) folded. It carries an 8.0-inch foldable inner display and a 6.5-inch cover screen, both running at 120 Hz. Happily, that slimming act hasn't come at the expense of the camera stack

The rear system pairs a 200 MP main sensor with a 50 MP ultra-wide and a 10-megapixel telephoto offering 3x optical zoom. Samsung says the 200 MP mode now supports HDR, promising more dynamic range in high-resolution stills. Two 10-megapixel selfie cameras cover the cover screen and inner display.

On the video side, the Fold 8 Ultra records up to 8K and introduces support for the APV codec, including a Cine LUT option that lets creators preview cinematic color grades directly in Pro Video mode before recording, rather than having to wait until post. Samsung's ProVisual Engine has also been updated, with the company claiming improved noise reduction, stabilisation and color processing specifically for low-light video. This is currently badged as ‘Nightography Video’, but hopefully won’t be for long.

Battery capacity rises to 5000 mAh, the largest yet in the Z Fold series, and Samsung has moved to a silicon-carbon cell.

Galaxy Z Fold 8

The standard Z Fold 8 takes a shorter, wider form factor than previous models, making it closer to a passport in size. Samsung is pitching the unfolded portrait orientation for reading and the landscape mode for video and games. It carries a 7.6-inch 120 Hz foldable inner display and a 5.5-inch 120Hz cover screen.

The camera hardware is understandably more modest than the Ultra's: a 50 MP wide sensor paired with a 50 MP ultra-wide, plus a 10-megapixel selfie camera on each screen. No telephoto here, so anyone wanting the longer reach will need to step up to the Ultra.

Galaxy Z Flip 8

The clamshell Z Flip 8 gets a 6.9-inch 120 Hz foldable screen and a 4.1-inch 120 Hz cover display. Cameras are a 50 MP main sensor and a 12 MP ultra-wide on the outside, with a 10 MP selfie lens inside. It's a modest step up on paper rather than a dramatic one, but the new main sensor should help in low light and cropping.

Everything else

Samsung also announced the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, its thinnest rugged smartwatch to date, with new hydration guidance features, alongside the Galaxy Watch 9 with expanded health software.

The event's other headline was the appearance of Samsung's first pair of smart glasses, though, apart from the presence of the Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 Platform in the designer frames, detailed specs (did you see what we did there?) were thin on the ground.

Pricing and availability 

All three phones go on sale August 7. The Fold 8 Ultra will cost from $2,099 (up $100 on the Fold 7), the Fold 8 from $1,899,  and the Flip 8 from $1,199.
