Nikon has confirmed that ZR firmware 2.00 is coming soon, with support for Log3G10 gamma when recording in H.265 enabling RED color science.

Nikon has confirmed that firmware version 2.00 for the Nikon ZR, its first major update for the popular full-frame compact cinema camera, will be released “soon.” No date has been given, though in September, when it first announced that it was developing the firmware, Nikon said the update would arrive in 2026.

The update adds support for Log3G10 gamma when recording in the compact H.265 video file format, enabling shooting that incorporates RED color science. Nikon’s September announcement paired Log3G10 with REDWideGamutRGB, but this announcement mentions only the former.

The update also adds a selectable level for [High ISO NR], which Nikon’s September announcement specified as applying to H.265 Log recording. Focus peaking display will be available when recording in R3D NE format, the RAW format developed for Nikon cameras to carry RED color science.

There are two new features not on the list Nikon published in September: more functions can be assigned to the command dials and function buttons, giving single-action access to key settings, and a 3D LUT can be applied to HDMI output.

Open gate recording and a desqueeze display for anamorphic lenses are not part of 2.00. In September, Nikon said it was developing both with the goal of including them in ZR firmware in 2027. The same announcement said RED is updating its RED CONTROL and RED CONTROL PRO apps to support remote control of the ZR, with no date given.
