Honestly, we try and keep on the straight and narrow and write about the business of creating moving and still images most of the time, but sometimes we get distracted. And you have to admit a backyard roller coaster is one hell of a distraction.
Man, and the neighbours thought the pickleball court was going to be a bit noisy...
Half-hearted apologies for the diversion away from all things cameras and lighting and so on, though at least you're going to have plenty of subject material to document while this goes up in your backyard. Courtesy of bespoke domestic ride manufacturer Magictecture, this is Coaster-in-a-Box.
The company makes its money putting up rides in peoples' backyards in the USA, and is using that experience to put together a modular system that comes in three basic configurations and is self-assembled in your own garden. Yes, self-assembled. And you thought Ikea drawers were awkward.
Top speed is 25mph and max height is 25 feet.
All sounds jolly fun and pre-orders are open now, but before you crack open the toolbox and clear away that paddling pool from the patio, there is the pricing to talk about. Costs start at $110k for the smallest set offering 100 foot of track, and rise up to $220k for the 300-foot model. Then you need to add one of the company's self-propelled karts to the mix (single-seater, $85k; double seater $120k), meaning you're not going to get much change from $200k even for the starter set.
The company says that means Coaster-in-a-Box is competitively priced with "other luxury backyard entertainment objects such as luxury pools, yachts, or your own golf green." To our mind, 'yachts' is stretching the definition of backyard a bit, but then some of the American super-rich can run to very, very large backyards we suppose.
We now return you to your normal programming...
