Canon's PowerShot V10, its first compact camera designed for vlogging

2 minute read

The new Canon PowerShot V10 promises single handed operations and a range of features to get vloggers creating content fast.

Canon's new PowerShot V10 is listed by the company from the outset as a lightweight and easy-to-use vlogging camera. It weighs just over 211g, combines high-quality microphones with a built-in stand, and features shake-free 4K UHD movie recording and professional looking background blur.

Interestingly, the sturdy vertical body is an entirely new design for Canon, and this has given it the ability so include a centred record button tailor-made for one-handed camera control.

The PowerShot V10 features a 1-inch CMOS sensor capable of delivering 4K video quality, while also offering 15.2 MP stills shooting capabilities. For added cinematic atmosphere, creators can quickly switch up the ambiance using any of the 14 included colour filter effects, while there is also a selectable Smooth Skin mode .

A Movie Digital IS mode is billed as ideal for handheld videography as it helps with avoiding camera shake, offering sharper, cleaner footage with more detail and clarity.

Matching the broad capabilities of various social media platforms, the PowerShot V10 can shoot in both orientations (users have to set playback to vertical) and record up to an hour of continuous video, though heating constraints limit that to closer to 20 minutes for 4K UHD 29.97p and Smooth Skin 4K recording is limited to 5 minutes. An auto level feature helps keep video straight and avoid slanted clips.

It's equipped with two large stereo microphones designed for narration, and a third audio noise reduction microphone. On top of the built-in wind filter, an optional windshield can be purchased as part of the advanced accessories kit.

Accessories evolve it into a pretty capable looking wee unit

A 2-inch LCD touchscreen can be flipped to the front, perfect for self-vlogging or recording others, while it also lends itself to handheld shooting, which Canon reckons can be largely single-handed. A built-in stand provides the option to record more free-standing content.

The PowerShot V10 is fully compatible with Canon Camera Connect app, allowing transfer to a smartphone or tablet over Wi-Fi with ease. HDMI and USB ports for easy transfers to a laptop or PC, or to use as a webcam.  For those who are constantly out and about, the device can be recharged on the go via USB-C.

Simplified live streaming capabilities allow users to go live quickly with dedicated menu options for live streaming on YouTube and Facebook.

The Canon PowerShot V10 can be purchased as a standard kit, with power cable, soft case, lens cap, windshield and wrist strap, and retails at £429.99/€489.99.
