Antigravity A1 Launches Worldwide — First All-in-One 8K 360 Drone
4:45

The headset-first Antigravity A1, the world's first all-in-one 8K 360 drone, launches today in key markets worldwide.

The Antigravity A1 caused a fair bit of fuss when it was announced over the summer. "Incubated by Insta360 in collaboration with third parties," it is the first drone to be released from the Insta360-backed Antigravity, and sounded interesting when it was first soft launched at the end of July in a classic spoiler operation to take the gloss off the new DJI 360 camera.

In August the company indicated a January launch, but it's arrived a month early with orders open now and retailers promising delivery next week. According to some reports, you could even find it on shelves in places including Best Buy ahead of today's official unveiling.

8K 360 Capture

The drone is based around a dual-lens 1/1.28-inch sensor system capable of recording 8K30, 5.2K60, or 4K100 in full 360 degrees. Every flight captures the entire environment in one pass. No gimbal adjustments, no missed angles.

This lets users choose perspectives in post, from cinematic pans to creative effects such as Tiny Planets or deep subject tracking. A feature dubbed FlowState Stabilization ensures the footage remains smooth and steady, even in windy conditions.

Headset-First

antigravity a1 gogglesOne of the key things about the A1 is it is resolutely headset-first. The accompanying Vision Goggles are a vital component of the experience, rather than being an optional accessory. Powered by Pancake optics and dual 1-inch Micro-OLED (2560×2560) displays, the goggles mirror the pilot’s head movements in real-time. These are coupled with the accompanying Grip controller’s FreeMotion Mode, which translates hand movements into precise flight paths, allowing users to steer simply by pointing the controller.

Antigravity reasons that this "point-to-fly" simplicity makes the A1 easier to master than traditional dual-stick drones. It's not prescriptive though; FPV Mode remains fully accessible for pilots who are after the muscle memory of classic control dynamics.

Build: Sub-250 Grams & User-Replaceable Lenses

Weighing just 249g with the standard included battery, the A1 complies with EU C0 class and similar sub-250 g regulations worldwide. It offers up to 24 minutes of flight time, or up to an extended 39 minutes of flight time via an optional high-capacity battery.

A retractable landing gear system protects the bottom lens during takeoff while maintaining an unobstructed view for invisible-drone shots.

As you would expect from Insta360, the lenses are user-replaceable along with the props. The A1 also features the first consumer deployment as far as we know of a payload detection system. Any extra weight or detected mods and it won't fly, simple as that.

Intelligent Tools

antigravity a1 in flightAs you would expect, a fair amount of effort has gone into the software side of the A1. This divides neatly into flight tools and image processing ones.

On the flight side of things, Antigravity is very pleased with the new Sky Path judging by the time it devotes to it in the launch materials. This allows pilots to design, save, and automate complex flight routes, allowing them to concentrate on capturing the visuals. These are repeatable too, allowing users to stitch together footage from different sessions.

Sky Genie lets the A1 execute complex 360 maneuvers like Orbit, Spiral, and Comet, with a single tap; Deep Track locks onto a subject with 'unwavering' precision; while Virtual Cockpit provides an immersive overlay of a dragon "turning a standard flight into a mythical journey." More skins will be released over the coming weeks. We're holding out for a NCC-1701D...

Away from flight,  you have the Antigravity app and Antigravity Studio desktop software. The software supports quick transfers, automatic reframing, color correction, and auto editing tools built to allow creators to get polished, ready-to-share videos with just a single tap.

And a single tap is what it's all about. The A1 is designed to get the joy of flight into the hands of as many people as possible. It's not cheap, but the early feedback from reviewers and testers is that it is something genuinely new and exciting rather than being another iterative drone release. If DJI does get banned in the US soon, this will happily float into multiple gaps.
