RØDECaster Video 1.4 adds 4K Capture Mode, NDI outputs, and expands RØDECaster Sync

RØDECaster Video 1.4 lets all three video consoles send each 4K30 camera feed as its own NDI stream. It's free, and Sync now covers the whole range.

RØDE has released RØDECaster Video 1.4, a free firmware update for the RØDECaster Video, RØDECaster Video S, and RØDECaster Video Core all-in-one video production consoles. The update introduces two new operating modes that turn the consoles into dedicated multi-camera capture and distribution systems, in either 4K30 or 1080p60, outputting multiple feeds over NDI and recording isolated tracks straight to storage.

The RØDECaster Video was originally designed as a full HD live production switcher, and 4K Capture Mode adds a separate operating mode for UHD (3840×2160) capture and distribution. Each console takes multiple UHD30 camera feeds over HDMI (four on the RØDECaster Video, three on the Video S and Video Core) and sends each out as its own NDI stream over NDI HX. Each source can also be recorded as an isolated 4K track to an attached SSD in H.264 or H.265.

One caveat: in capture mode, media and graphic playback, overlays, multi-camera scenes, and keying are disabled, while simple HDMI switching remains, mainly for monitoring. All of these remain available in the default FHD Switching Mode. Switching between standard operation and either capture mode reboots the console.

A Full HD Capture Mode is also available, for maintaining 60 fps at 1080p across multiple feeds. Both modes focus the console's octa-core engine on capture and distribution, RØDE says, with the full RØDE audio mixer running alongside. When keying, graphics, transitions, scenes, and direct streaming are called for, the standard FHD Switching Mode is available as usual.

Each NDI and ISO output appears as a custom routing destination, so each can have its own audio mix, for example, full program audio on one output and a single microphone on another. Individual NDI outputs can be enabled or disabled. On the original RØDECaster Video, NDI output 4 can carry either camera 4 or a multiview, which has a standard information display and a quad mode.

Sync expanded

Elsewhere in the update, RØDECaster Sync, which connects a RØDECaster Video console to a RØDECaster Pro II or Duo over a single USB-C cable, now works with the RØDECaster Video and Video S as well as the Video Core. The Pro II or Duo acts as a control surface for both machines, with a new Video SMART Pad type covering switching, scenes, media, overlays, and auto-switching.

The two devices share a single nine-channel mixer drawn from any input on either unit, along with recording, channel processing, and custom output routing. Everything records to the RØDECaster Video's drive.

The update also adds OTIO timeline export for Adobe Premiere Pro, alongside the DaVinci Resolve EDL export introduced in version 1.3. The consoles can now accept audio from any compatible USB webcam, and the Scene Builder in the RØDECaster App gains new keyboard shortcuts.
