RED’s new Control Pro app - camera control for a price

1 minute read

The RED Control Pro App gives users advanced control over their V-RAPTOR, KOMODO, and multicam arrays, but wants rather a lot of money to do it.

Available for anyone in the Apple ecosystem running a fairly recent OS on Mac or iPad, the new RED Control Pro App gives users an impressive degree of control over their V-RAPTOR, KOMODO, or multicam deployments. Its features include multi-camera control, a quick settings overview, FTP file access, advanced LUT, CDL and PRESET management, independent image orientation setting, and everything you need to be able to monitor the live streaming of several cameras simultaneously.

As well as a native iPadOS version, RED Control Pro can also be installed as a native version on MacOS, which includes even more options such as clip auto download, and detachable and resizable windows. You can see the difference between them by comparing the Mac version at the top of the page with the iPad one below.

There are a couple of caveats. It is only compatible with V-RAPTOR and KOMODO 6K cameras, and not DSMC2 or previous generation RED cameras; lens control requires a compatible electronic lens; equally understandably multi-camera control requires all devices to be connected to the same local network; and its minimum compatibility specs are iPads running iPadOS 14 or above and macOS systems running Big Sur or later on either Apple Silicon or Intel chips.

The main caveat though for many users is probably going to be the price. RED wants $499 for RED Control Pro when it releases in the App Store on October 13, likely restricting its cost-effectiveness to multi-cam set ups where its ability to globally change things from a central point might well be worth the investment for large productions.
