GoPro has just dropped a new teaser on YouTube featuring footage captured from its forthcoming GP3 processor, and not only does it show what it can do but also hints at the sort of camera the company might be working on.
One of the most striking things about the latest footage released from action camera specialist GoPro's new GP3 sensor is that it is exceedingly non-action camera. The first still images looked good; but this is even better.
There is a distinct cinematic feel to all this, with the images transitioning from a macro shot of the human eye all the way to a detailed and impressive close up of the Moon. It's only 23 seconds long, but it says a lot in that time. And there is some very shallow depth of field on offer.
What this points to
RedShark Consulting Editor Simon Wyndham has some definite thoughts about what all this means. He reckons that the Moon shot in particular is the key that will unlock this puzzle as you would need a very substantial lens to capture that amount of detail. So, either the camera has an exceptionally capable built-in zoom, or it's an interchangeable lens system.
As we've talked about recently, GoPro really needs the next generation of its cameras to succeed. Quite what it is planning on launching though is still firmly under wraps.
It has talked of leveraging the AI-enhanced power of the 5 nm System-on-a-Chip (SoC) architecture of GP3 to create a cinema-grade product. But, will that be a box camera such as Blackmagic's PYXIS range, or something that leans more into the company's action camera heritage to produce something more unusual? Will the HERO14 Black finally get a release date?
We'll know soon. But it is NAB next month, and as GoPro ramps up the drops and teases, something that could potentially put the cat amongst the pigeons in the traditional broadcast and film markets is feeling increasingly likely
