Adobe's Substance 3D Painter 12.1 adds OpenPBR support, Auto Rebake, and Skew Map Painting, part of a wider OpenPBR rollout across Substance 3D tools and assets.

Adobe has rolled out a set of Substance 3D updates timed for this week’s SIGGRAPH 2026, covering Painter, Designer, Sampler, the Assets library, and digital twin workflows.

OpenPBR across the ecosystem

Adobe has been rolling out the OpenPBR material standard across Substance 3D to keep material appearance consistent between tools and renderers. OpenPBR now ships in Substance 3D Painter 12.1, having already arrived in Substance 3D Designer 16 and Substance 3D Sampler earlier this year. All 14,000+ materials, decals, and atlases in the Substance 3D Assets library are being converted to OpenPBR, and Adobe has released a production OpenPBR implementation as open source on GitHub.

Substance 3D Painter 12.1

The latest release of Substance 3D Painter focuses on texture baking. Skew Map Painting lets artists correct skewing artifacts introduced during baking, using a brush for manual fixes, Polygon Fill to update whole polygons, or Edge Protection to preserve mesh edges. Auto Rebake rebakes only the parts of a mesh affected by a change rather than the full project. The baking workspace has been reorganized, and a new Hard Surface Auto UV mode generates orthographically aligned UV layouts for mechanical assets.

Substance 3D Designer 16

Released earlier this year, Designer 16 added a redesigned Shape Splatter v2 node for building 3D forms procedurally from an input shape, and a new Signed Distance Field (SDF) nodes for constructing and manipulating 3D forms directly in the node graph. There is also a 3D Viewer node for real-time results while building, and consolidated displacement controls.

Assets and Sampler

The Substance 3D Assets library has added 848 materials and 2736 models over the past year, bringing the current total to 23,516 assets. New additions include the "Shattered World Signature Collection" by Kai ‘Kizzle’ Mergener, a collection of 15 dark fantasy-themed materials. Substance 3D Sampler now includes Material Creation Templates that preconfigure channels and settings for common material types, including OpenPBR materials, with support for saving custom templates.

Digital twins

Adding much of these developments together, Adobe also demonstrated an end-to-end CAD-to-3D-digital-twin workflow at SIGGRAPH, built on USD and OpenPBR, showing a path from product design to review within connected tools.
