Avid has partnered with Google Cloud to bring Gemini-powered agentic AI into Media Composer and Content Core — but how deep will the initial integration go?

Avid has announced a multi-year strategic partnership with Google Cloud to integrate generative and agentic AI into both its professional editing and media management tools. The collaboration embeds Google's Gemini models and Vertex AI into the Media Composer NLE, as well as the Avid Content Core cloud-native media library.

Avid reckons that Google Cloud's BigQuery, Vision Warehouse, and Vertex AI Search move Content Core away from being passive storage into an active, searchable library accessible to distributed creative teams worldwide. Users can search media using natural language descriptions based on visual content, dialogue, or emotional cues, rather than relying on filenames or manual tagging. Avid claims this can turn "weeks of manual archive discovery into seconds of automated insight."

Agentic editing

Media Composer, meanwhile, gains the same search abilities alongside a multimodal Gemini extension that allows editors to interact with an AI agent directly within their project. That has a range of practical applications that are listed by the company as ranging from intelligent metadata enhancement and automated logging to B-roll generation.

This is an interesting list. AI metadata enhancement has been a given in the industry for around three years now, while B-roll generation feels very cutting edge. It feels like Media Composer is planning to catch up with the AI frontrunners such as Adobe Premiere at some speed.

"By embedding agentic AI directly into the tools video editors live in, we’re moving beyond simple automation," said Anil Jain, global managing director, Strategic Industries, Google Cloud. "With Avid Media Composer and Google Cloud, an editor can now collaborate with an intelligent agent to create assets on the fly and handle the heavy lifting of matching styles and filling timelines, enabling them to focus on storytelling instead of infrastructure."

Well, if it's good enough for Apple...

Avid is not the first company to offload AI to Google Gemini rather than build its own, and it won't be the last. After several years banging its head against the wall, Apple decided to use Gemini to power Siri in its next long-overdue update. AI, and agentic AI in particular, is still expensive to implement and difficult to do well.

Avid and Google describe the current integration as a foundation for further agentic workflows to be deployed across Avid's wider product portfolio. The real test will be how seamlessly it all holds together in practice, especially when ProTools, third-party plugins, and the realities of a complex edit enter the picture.
