Gravity VFX/Stereoscopic Conversion Breakdown

Written by Patrick Jong Taylor

The critically-acclaimed Gravity thrilled audiences with its mesmerizing portrayal of astronauts struggling with an outer space worst case scenario. Prime Focus World, a leading VFX and post services company, made this breakdown to demonstrate how they created a parallel stereoscopic conversion and VFX workflow for the film.

By now, you've probably heard of Gravity, Alphonso Cuaron's nightmare in space, starring Sandra Bullock and Goerge Clooney. You've probably already seen it, perhaps multiple times. As a RedShark reader and someone who likes to stay informed on film tech news, you've likely also watched numerous featurettes and behind the scenes videos, profiling different technical aspects of the production and post processes.

The VFX breakdown at the bottom of this page is a little different. Produced by Prime Focus World, a major player in the VFX and post game with facilities worldwide, this breakdown doesn't just show the tried-and-true wireframes leading to the finished sequences, but provides an important context for what you're seeing. Prime Focus is using the video as a marketing tool to demonstrate the benefits of its proprietary View-D process. View-D functions by creating a parallel workflow for the stereoscopic 3D conversion of 2D footage and plates and the insertion and manipulation of VFX. But don't take my word for it: watch the video and gain new insights into the making of Gravity.
