Hamnet won Best Picture at last night's Golden Globes, but behind the lens the real winner was ARRI.
Hamnet winning Best Picture at the 2026 Golden Globes is hardly an upset. The reviews have been absolutely stellar, though Sinners missing out is probably going to cause an inquest or two.
The other big awards on the movie side of things went to One Battle After Another (Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, also Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson), and The Secret Agent (Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language). Oh, and K-Pop Demon Hunters deservedly won the Best Motion Picture - Animated award.
The big winner behind the scenes in all of this was ARRI. Despite the company having a bit of an annus horribilis in 2025, its cameras remain hugely successful as a valedictory post it published on LinkedIn over the weekend before the ceremony pointed out.
Both Hamnet and The Secret Agent shot on the Alexa 35, with the latter also leaning on the Alexa Mini. One Battle After Another used the Panavision XL2. According to data compiled by the team at YM Cinema, the XL2 is part of a following pack that also includes the RED Komodo and V-Raptor XL, Sony VENICE, IMAX, VistaVision, and even a 16mm Bolex (Spain's Sirāt).
Film Continues to Win
It's too early in awards season to really pull out any major trends. However, it certainly seems that film and film cameras are more than just making up the numbers, at least as far as movies go.
ARRI also did pretty well on the small screen too. In terms of the big television winners, The Pitt used the Alexa Mini LF, The Studio the Alexa 35 (including for its marvellous The Oner episode), and it's not until you get to the multi-award winning Adolescence and its use of the DJI Ronin 4D that you end up with anything significantly out of this mainstream.
We'll keep an eye on this and other trends as the awards season progresses. Certainly there seem to be some shifts elsewhere in the production space, with Adobe already quietly talking about Premiere's role in more nomination-tier films than even this year such as Marty Supreme and Train Dreams. With those crucial nomination lists for the BAFTAs, The Oscars, and more to come, it's going to be a busy month.
