DJI's Osmo Mobile 8P launches globally today, bringing the new FrameTap detachable display remote, upgraded tracking, and Apple DockKit support to the company's smartphone gimbal line.

The DJI Osmo Mobile 8P launched in China on April 21, and now gets a full global roll out everywhere except the US. The headline addition for this latest generation product is the new Osmo FrameTap, a magnetically attached remote that mirrors the smartphone or Multifunctional Module 2 view on its own screen.

A joystick handles gimbal movement and zoom, and the fill light's brightness and color temperature (eight levels each) can be adjusted from the remote. It snaps off quickly for distance shooting or solo framing, and supports distances up to 25 meters (82 feet) in ideal conditions.

The Osmo FrameTap detaches magnetically and can control the gimbal from up to 25 m away

This is definitely a highly useful addition to the model's spec, but doesn't seem enough to have made DJI opt to name it as the Mobile 9, instead adopting the new 'P for Pro' suffix model that it is using for the upcoming Osmo Pocket 4P

Eighth-gen stablization

The gimbal itself is a 3-axis design using DJI's eighth-generation stabilization. It weighs 386 g (13.62 oz), has a built-in tripod and 215 mm (8.46 in) extension rod, and offers up to 10 hours of battery. A USB-C port doubles as a phone charger. The tripod base has been redesigned to open wider for better surface stability.

Tracking is handled in two different ways. The Multifunctional Module 2 (available on the Advanced Tracking Combo up) works independently of the phone app, covering people, pets, and general objects including cars and landmarks. For app-based work, ActiveTrack 8.01 in DJI Mimo handles crowded environments and fast-moving or partially obstructed subjects. iPhone users can bypass both and use native Apple DockKit tracking through the Camera app.

The DJI Mimo app adds DynamicZoom (dolly-zoom-style Move In/Move Out), Slow Shutter for light trails, Action Shot for fast subjects, and a 2.35:1 Widescreen mode. The pan axis supports 360° continuous rotation for panoramic work; tilting it forward enables low-angle shooting.
