Sony's new GP-VPT3 three-in-one shooting grip and detachable wireless remote controller provide new control options for Sony Alpha Series and the Vlog Camera Series.
The new Sony GP-VPT3 looks to be an extremely versatile tool for Sony shooters. It’s a shooting grip basically that easily switches between self-facing and outward-facing shots, as well as being a mini tripod for setting up the camera, and a detachable remote controller for operating the camera from a distance. The remote is also available separately (Sony refers to it as a 'remote commander' rather than the far more mundane 'remote controller'), the RMT-VP2 communicating wirelessly with Sony cameras via Bluetooth letting you operate the camera and shoot video and still images remotely for extra shooting flexibility.
The grip has been ergonomically designed to allow handheld shooting while performing key camera operations, such as zoom and focus, with one hand, regardless of dominant hand, for both still images and videos. The head mechanism, meanwhile, allows for one-touch switching between self-portrait and outward shooting, and the tilt mechanism enables free angle adjustment. Max camera weight is 1.5 kg (3.3 lb).
The detachable remote is equipped with a MOVIE button, Zoom/Focus button, and C1 (Custom) button, allowing one-handed operation. This allows shutter operation from a distance so the photographer can be included in group photos and reduces camera shake in low-light conditions. The remote commander connects to Sony cameras and Xperia smartphones with a wireless communication range of approximately 10 metres (33 feet, give or take).
The grip and remote commander both connect to the main unit without cables or receivers, maintaining dust and moisture proof performance during camera connection.
Pricing and availability
The GP-VPT3 will be available in June 2025 for approximately $158/€145/£120 and the RMT-VP2 for approximately $88/€85/£75. Both come in black or white.
