Sennheiser has introduced its new MKE200 microphone for both DSLR/mirrorless cameras and smartphones.

While Sennheiser has miniaturized the size and the price of the MKE200, they certainly haven’t skimped on features and audio quality.

I’ve had an advance unit for the past couple of weeks, using it on a Sony mirrorless camera, and have found a serious increase in quality over merely using the camera’s built-in microphone.

Of course, professionals wouldn’t really consider a built-in camera microphone for audio, but the MKE200 at its sub-$100 price point opens higher production value capabilities for a broader market segment.

The first thing to note is that the mic comes with 2 mini-plug cables, one for smartphones and one for cameras. While the smartphone cable is clearly marked, I erroneously used it the first time I tested the camera. At least I learned that the smartphone cable does not carry power from the camera as the camera cable does.

The microphone picks up in a supercardiod direction pattern for excellent side noise rejection. While shorter in range than its longer MKE400 sibling, the MKE200 nonetheless is a perfect match for smaller cameras and phones with mini audio-in capabilities.

The shoe mounting foot connects with a small but effective integrated shock mount and the case serves as an excellent noise attenuator. For outdoor shooting, Sennheiser supplies a furry windscreen which while a bit of challenge to mount, effectively deals with wind interference.

The MKE200 lists at $99.95 and begins shipping September 1.
