What gets me is how innovative it was. It took some of its competitors a decade or more to catch up with core features that were found in version one! Timeline editing, format agnostic performance and auto crossfades are just a few examples. Let’s have a quick look at just a few of the features that Vegas Pro introduced over the years before anyone else — or at least led the pack — with these innovations:
- No special hardware needed — works on any PC with any PC compatible sound card.
- Direct-to-timeline editing (that is, not a Source Window model) workflow — VP invented this very organic way to work. Broke out of the mould of Source/Record. Just drop it on the timeline and get busy.
- Real-time playback — no pre-rendering, just drop it on the timeline and hit play.
- Open almost any file without having to pre-render — VP was famous for this one. People thought it was magic. It goes with the one above. Crossfade form a DV 24p file to a WMV file to a DV 29.9 file or from a .wav file to a .mp3 file of different sample rates and bit depths and it all played in real-time and conformed to the project settings.
- Edit as you playback — put it in loop playback and keep finessing your edit as you watch it playback. No need to set an edit or effect and render first.
- Automatic cross-fades — There are still some apps out there that can’t do this. Simply overlap the clips and it automatically creates a cross-fade equal to the length of the overlap. What could be easier?
- Unlimited audio/video tracks — only limited by your hardware, not the software.
- Editing to a measure and beats ruler — If you are a musician, this makes perfect sense. If you cut your video to music this will speed up your workflow. I still don’t think anyone else does this?
- Output a wide variety of formats without special hardware or plugins — A lot of folks bought VP just for this one feature.
- Superior audio recording, mixing and editing — No need to leave the app to do your audio post. Sub-frame accurate (down to the sample level) editing and audio placement. Still unmatched.
- Built-in compositing — no need move out to a separate app to do your compositing.
- Time stretch — video and audio — organically stretch or compress with a simple mouse drag or by the numbers if you prefer.
- Zoom in/out on the timeline with mouse wheel — fast way to move about a large project.
- Compound clips in a timeline event (i.e. multiple “takes”) — audio and video. Great to quickly show a producer a variety of shots or VO takes without having to have a bunch of separate tracks. Each timeline event could hold multiple clips or audio files.
- Audio and video effects available at the track, event, bus, or program level — This provides great flexibility when it comes to deciding where best to place an effect.
- Keyframed audio/video effects — animate effects changes over time and preview in real-time.
- Real-time scopes — Hit play and watch the scopes react to colour and luminance changes in real-time.
- Split Preview window (to see the before/after of an effect) — You could dictate exactly how that split was formed and where to show the before and after. Great when working on skin tones and other colour problems.
- Effects chains up to 32 effects deep — The order of the chain mattered and it was easy to reorder and see or hear the results in real-time (no rendering).
- Supported Panasonic’s DVX 24 fps format — natively, no pre-rendering to another format.
- Pitch shift — Very flexible. Shift by 1/100 of a cent up or down. Shift without affecting time. Or increase/decrease time without changing pitch.
- Real-time slo-mo preview — no rendering, in fact, you could control it with an envelope and ease in or out of slo-mo.
- Re-order audio/video tracks (no need to have audio at the bottom, video at the top) — set up the workspace the way you want to work by simply dragging and dropping the tracks where you want them.
- MPEG 2 long GOP editing — again no pre-rendering. Native. Drop it on the timeline and start editing.
- XDCAM editing — first to natively support this format.
- 5.1 surround sound editing — Right in your video editor, no need to leave and go to another app for surround sound post work. Even render out the dolby AC3 surround sound audio file.
- First Windows-based OpenCL product — VP was the first to jump on this bandwagon and now it’s everywhere.
- Complete Stereoscopic 3D workflow — no other hardware or software needed.
- 3D planes — do your compositing in 3D space right in the app.
- Closed Captioning — complete CC workflow, preserve the CC when editing, delete it, reposition it, edit the text, create new CC from scratch.
- Mixing Console — perfect when doing a complex audio post or a multitrack mix.
- MIDI surface control — Like to mix using hardware, no problem. Send and receive MIDI control codes and control the app from hardware.
- Optional Quantize to frames — this enabled sub-frame accurate editing, important in audio post.
- Keyboard trimming — Go mouse-free and trim, crop, and edit right from the keyboard.
- Loudness meters — Built-in loudness meters with the ability to print a loudness log to help you stay compliant with loudness standards such as the CALM Act.
- Application scripting and extensions — all kinds of functions could be automated with scripts. A whole community of VP scripters was born.
- Dynamic RAM preview — If the project got too big for your older PC you could still see the results of a complex edit or stack of effects in real-time with a quick RAM preview.
- Red-book CD authoring/burning — Unheard of in a video editor. People bought VP just for the audio tools.
- Vegas Pro Connect, iPad app for collaboration — This was more than just an iPad control surface. It enabled collaboration between team members working on a project. Markers and notes could be passed back and forth between the team collaborating right in the project while working on the same Wi-Fi network. (however, it is a cool gesture-driven control surface too).
- Support for ACIDized information — Drop audio loops that have been ACIDized on the timeline and they will conform to the project tempo and pitch. Sweet.
These are not all the features of Vegas Pro and, of course, not all of these were in version one. But these are, in my opinion, the ones that broke new ground and led the pack in making editing faster and easier. It’s an impressive list.
The Vegas Pro team continued to invent under the direction of Monty Schmidt and Curt Palmer until Sony bought the technology in 2003. A large portion of the team that did all that inventing moved over to Sony so the development hardly missed a beat. Early on, Sony pretty much left the team alone to develop what they thought was important and Vegas Pro grew even stronger.
Then there was a change in upper management and they began to get more involved in decisions about the direction of the development and, again in my opinion, that took a toll. I never got the impression that they understood exactly who our core customer was and, even more important, what they needed. Consequently, resources were redirected to features that really didn’t help the core customer. A few versions were delivered that did not hit the mark for many of the loyal followers. But there is hope!
Magix, a company famous as creators of user-friendly multimedia software for over thirty years, purchased Vegas Pro and several other software titles from Sony in the spring of 2016. I was excited to see the release of version 15. I’ll have to go back and add — the most flexible UI the industry has ever seen to my list of firsts. I’m very happy to see Magix step up to take Vegas Pro into the future. They get software and know the people who use it, what they need. From what I can tell, they appear to be committed to staying on this path of innovation. I know the guys on the Vegas Pro team (still based in Madison Wisconsin) and they’re good. Expect them to carry on the tradition of crafting an application that makes the job of editing audio and video… fun.
