New lightweight, low latency and high-precision units fit seamlessly into VIVE Focus 3 headset for souped up VR experiences.

The metaverse and all things VR are a definite subtext of this year’s IBC as companies start to position themselves for the coming expansion and accompanying hype cycles. That means new and/or upgraded kit is very much on the agenda, with the new VIVE Focus 3 Eye Tracker and VIVE Focus 3 Facial Tracker being a case in point.

The VIVE Focus 3 Facial Tracker features a mono tracking camera that looks to capture expressions through 38 blend shapes across the lips, jaw, cheeks, chin, teeth, and tongue, mapping the resulting facial expressions and mouth movements onto avatars. A 60Hz tracking rate and optimised runtime for facial tracking allows users to sync lips to voice with minimal latency and it connects easily to VIVE Focus 3 headsets through a built-in USB Type-C port with no need for add-ons or adaptors.

Meanwhile, the VIVE Focus 3 Eye Tracker adds realistic eye movements and blinks to virtual avatars, as well as opening up the analysis of eye movement, attention, and focus, to businesses looking to slurp the data for behaviour analysis.

It operates via a dual camera setup with supporting IR illuminators and can capture data for gaze origin and direction, pupil size and position, and eye openness. It’s a lightweight module that attaches magnetically to the headset without impacting the balanced ergonomics, and the adjustable IPD works with the VIVE Focus 3 headset to help users find their viewing sweet spot.

It also makes gaze control possible, opening up some interesting new avenues for how people experience immersive content, as well as new accessibility options. Eye Tracking also has the potential to help hugely with GPU workloads, enabling foveated rendering routines that prioritise the areas where the user is actually focused.

Both units support Unity, Unreal Game Engine, and Native and, needless to say, can be used together to provide the full on, state of the art in 2022 VR experience.

The Focus 3 Eye Tracker and Focus 3 Facial Tracker are available to order now for £216 and £83 respectively.
