PIX-LR: Sound Devices solves the problem of getting high quality audio into an external recorder

A new pro-audio add-on from Sound Devices means that Video Devices recording monitors can have full professional audio facllities

External video recorders (also known as HDMI or SDI recorders and Recording Monitors) have become an established part of the independent filmmaker's kit. But while they certainly allow camera users to store their images in a higher quality compression format than is normally available in-camera, they've been unable to help much with audio, because they lack high quality microphone pre-amps and professional XLR inputs.

This is all set to change with the introduction of the Video Devices PIX-LR Audio Interface, designed specifically for their PIX-E series of recording monitors. ("Video Devices" is the name of the Video division of Sound Devices, a Wisconsin-based manufacturer of professional audio accessories for the filmmaking industry).

The PIX-LR attaches to the bottom of PIX-E series monitors with a 1/4" thread, and is powered directly by it.

It has two balanced inputs, via industry standard XLR-3F connections, and two balanced outputs, via XLR-3M sockets.

The PIX-LR also comes with Sound Devices-designed Mic Pre-Amps and limiters. There are two dedicated, recessable gain controls, and accurate, clear LED level meters. Large transport controls occupy the lower front panel.

We think this is an important new product because external recorders have always lacked pro audio mic amps and connectors. This, together with the fact that many lower cost cameras don't have particularly good audio recording facilities, means that the new PIX-LR is a really practical way to solve a genuine problem.
