Atlas adds 54mm, 95mm, and 138mm to Mercury Series lenses

1 minute read

One that we missed in the build-up to the Black Friday hubbub: the Atlas Lens Co has released the second set of its Mercury lenses for pre-order.

Group II of the Atlas Mercury Series lenses has just been released for pre-order and adds 54mm, 95mm, and 138mm glass to the already announced trio of 36mm, 42mm, and 76mm lenses.

Atlas promises the same vintage-inspired “warm, buttery anamorphic goodness” for the new trio, as already evident in the series

Features include:

  • Full-frame sensor coverage with 1.5x anamorphic coefficient
  • Aperture range from T2.2 - T16 for Mercury 42mm
  • Lightweight and compact at half the size and weight of most pro anamorphic lenses - 42mm weighs 2.3lbs (1.1kg) and measures 4.4in (11.2cm) in length
  • Exceptional optical performance with vintage geometric personality: Golden flares, pleasing barrel distortion, near-zero chromatic aberration
  • Standardized gears and diameters with 95mm front diameter
  • Arri PL mount

The imaging area of 36.7mm x 25.54mm covers full-frame sensors as well as 16:9 / 3:2 / 4:3 sensors, with easy delivery to 2:1 / 2.25:1 / 2.66:1 / 2.4:1.

In addition to the ease of supporting multiple delivery aspects, Atlas says the Mercury Series 1.5x optical design allows for many of the visual characteristics image-makers love about the traditional 2x cinemascope format (oblong oval bokeh, barrel distortion, shallow depth of field) while also allowing for a meaningful size and weight reduction in the overall physical product design. This results in a decent balance of compact size, weight, optical performance, and professional-focused usability across a variety of productions.

Pricing is pitched at $5995 per lens for the new trio (compared to $7995 per lens for the initial three), with the pre-order deposit set at $995 and $1295 respectively. Two three-lens sets will be available: the 36/42/72 for $23,985 and the 54/95/138 for $17,985. All six will set you back $41,970. Delivery is expected in September 2024.
