Finally, after what seems like months because it genuinely has been, DJI has announced that the Osmo Pocket 4P gimbal camera will be available worldwide on 30 July.
The DJI Osmo Pocket 4P worldwide release date has been confirmed by a very short, minimalist video dropped by DJI on its various social channels today.
It has been a strange, convoluted journey to the market for what is one of the most eagerly awaited cameras of the year. Complicated by first the announcement and then the presence of the very good Insta360 Luna Ultra, DJI first teased the cameras as far back as April this year immediately after the release of the DJI Osmo Pocket 4.
Following that, it had a dummy launch mid-May at a widely trailed but very inconsequential Cannes launch event, before the first review units appeared in people's hands in early June. DJI kept a lid on anybody writing the actual review up though, even when pre-orders opened in China on 19 June, giving us the first full view of the specs.
You can read about them in detail here: DJI Osmo Pocket 4P: specs and price confirmed as China pre-orders open. In summary it has two 1-inch-class sensors: a stacked wide-angle unit (20 mm equivalent, f/2.0) using LOFIC for 17 stops of dynamic range, and a 1/1.28-inch telephoto. It shoots D-Log 2 at 10-bit, goes up to 4K240 video, has a 2-inch, 1000 nit touchscreen, and three built-in mics. The 1545 mAh battery gives up to 210 minutes use, and it has 103 GB of built-in storage. On-device extras include six film tones and real-time skin smoothing, with more color grading unlocked via the DJI Mimo app.
And finally, the last piece of the puzzle. On 30 July at 12:00 GMT it will be available worldwide, though as yet we don't know whether that will be a pre-order for the following weeks or with immediate availability. Given the amount of time that has passed, you would hope the latter. Sadly, however, there has been no movement on DJI's contested status in the US. Indeed, the FCC has doubled down on that recently, taking movements against companies it suspects of selling rebadged DJI kit such as the forthcoming Xtra Muse 2 Pro.
So, as far as we know, the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P will still not be made available in the US. However, we will at last be able to publish our review. Find out what we think about the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P, how far it moves the needle from the Pocket 4, and how it compares to the Luna Ultra, next week. We'll also finally find out how much it costs.
