Avid launches DNxHR resolution independent codec

Avid products will now finally support 4K natively so that you can edit 4K in real time instead of using a proxy, but there have been a few surprises with this announcement at IBC

Firstly their products will now also have native projects with aspect ratios of 2.39:1 and 1.85:1 as well as the usual 16:9 stuff. Colour depth can be 8 or 10 bit and Colour Spaces can be Rec. 709, Rec 2020 and DCI-P3.

New Avid Project Options

The big surprise however has been the announcement of a new standard codec “DNxHR”. Avid are claiming resolution independence for this codec and describe it as:

"A completely fluid architecture for working with material of any resolution – SD, HD, 4K and beyond on your premises…. or in the cloud… across your entire workflow."

"This new architecture allows you to scale fluidly with any resolution – proxy to native. Work with 4K today…., 8K tomorrow, and who knows….even 64K … 128K in the future. There are NO architectural limits."

I’m interpreting that as meaning that the new codec will work at any resolution you choose be that 5.3K, 2.4K, 320x240, 640x480, 11.71K or whatever else you might think of. Although presently I understand that there are still fixed project resolutions in Avid products in spite of what this new codec might be capable of.

Avid also seem to be claiming that the codec is scaleable enough to work as a low bandwidth codec as well as working as a near lossless codec like DNxHD.

Here is a quote from them on that:

Announcing DNxHR--a high resolution codec. Choose your bitrate from low bandwidth to what we believe is near loseless."

Details are a bit sketchy at present but it obviously all sounds very interesting.
