Colour Correction basics - an excellent tutorial video

How often do people really take the time to explain the real basics? With stuff like colour correction, while you can and should rely on your eyes and a good, colour-calibrated monitoring system, you also need to make sure that your graded output is technically OK, or it might be rejected by your client

Almost as bad, you might find that you're not using getting the best out of your available media or equipment.

    This is a great example of how important it is to know the basics on any subject, and also the importance of a good explanation of these basics. Once you understand the principles on which a proceeding is based, the rest flows naturally. With regard to this particular issue, I always had difficulty understanding the vectorscope, RGB parade, and waveform monitor,despite everything I've read and the tutorials I've watched. Now it all makes sense to me.

  • This information is very important and often glossed over in 'film schools'. As a retired broadcast TV professional, I'm constantly disappointed by the lack of real understanding of vectorscopes and waveform monitors by today's young producers of video content. These are the basic tools for video post. Imagine a recording studio operating without Peak or VU meters? Then how can you edit quality video without reference to the levels? An investment in high quality reference displays is money well spent. Today's generation of video producers will find it hard to believe that just a few years ago, most broadcast TV was shot on cameras with B&W CRT viewfinders so the operator relied on an understanding of the superimposed waveform to shoot acceptable images.
