Viltrox has announced the AF 56 mm F1.2 Pro E and XF lenses for APS-C cameras. The lenses feature a professional optical designed to deliver high resolution from center to edge and thus support the capabilities of higher-megapixel sensors.
Update: Along with the release of the two new lenses below, Viltrox has announced that it has joined the L-Mount Alliance. It's now the tenth company on the list, and follows in the wake of fellow low-cost lens manufacturer Sirui joining earlier this year. No word yet on when the first L-Mount lenses will be unveiled, but given the timing we're crossing our fingers for IBC.
Viltrox's latest AF 56 mm F1.2 Pro E and XF lenses are the third release in the Pro series for APS-C, sitting midway between the already available 27 mm and 75 mm models. All are headlined by that F1.2 large aperture. This is going to provide users with shallow depth of field, smooth background blur, and clear subject separation, making them ideal for portrait photography. Almost as a bonus they also allow for faster shutter speeds and lower ISO settings in low-light and well-lit conditions.
The lenses use 13 elements in 8 groups, including a precision aspherical element, an ED (extra-low dispersion) element, and 3 HR (high refractive) elements. Viltrox’s HD nano coating is applied to control aberrations and improve sharpness and clarity across the frame.
It's not just about portraits either. An 85 mm-equivalent field of view is also going to be a good fit for landscapes.
Viltrox says the HyperVCM motor delivers fast, precise, and importantly quiet autofocus with minimal vibration. The silent operation and minimal focus breathing should help contribute towards a smooth and professional feel for video.
Worth pointing out too that the lenses are built with a forged aluminum alloy body and weather-sealed construction. The matte black finish and protective coatings provide resistance to scratches, dust, and moisture.
Pre-orders are open now with shipping expected towards the end of the month, around the beginning of October. Pricing is $580 / €599 / £530.
