Sony FX5 delay: late October or later release window

Sony Japan has revised its FX5 delay notice, setting a target of late October or later, but still won't confirm why the camera is late.

Sony has, for what we believe is the first time, issued an actual timeframe for when its long-delayed FX5 cinema camera will ship. A brief addition to Sony Japan’s original August 18 statement on the delay, dated September 18, 2026, updates the postponement notice. And whereas that original notice gave no formal release window at all, the revised version now reads 10月下旬以降, which translates as “late October or later” for the target timing.

This is even later than the October 15/16 date we last reported for the camera’s arrival, taken respectively from the US dealer network and Sony EU site listings. However, it does match the information we were told at IBC that dealer stock was expected "toward the end of October."

The postponement covers the FX5 camera body along with three related accessories: the DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder, the XLR-H2 XLR handle unit, and the VMC-BNCU1 timecode adapter cable.

Sony’s latest revision to its statement doesn’t add any further information about the cause beyond the previously official 生産上の都合, “production-related circumstances.” It does state, though, that the marketing campaign surrounding the launch will also be paused, which is hardly surprising.

Sony expert Reiko Beitz confirmed to us at IBC that the company was “still working to make it a fully polished, high-quality product, and that takes time,” but beyond that Sony is remaining extremely tight-lipped about the causes for the delay. That has left the internet to fill in the gaps, and in the period since the delay was first revealed, it’s been variously ascribed to pre-order volume, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake at the Kumamoto Technology Center chip plant, the global RAM shortage, manufacturing defects, software problems, and more.

As of now, there's no confirmation that any FX5 units have actually reached customers. A small first batch is reported to have reached EU dealers back in August before Sony pulled it from sale again, which would indicate a pre-release recall to address a fault more than some of the other reasons. No official reviews were published beyond a scattering of initial impressions hands-on reports that made it clear they were talking about a pre-production unit running beta software.

Those were all positive, and interest in the camera remains high. But as the weeks drag on and there is no official explanation about the reasons for the delay, enthusiasm may start to wane.
