Sony Camera Authenticity Solution adds video verification

The latest Camera Authenticity Solution ver.2026.1 software update expands Sony's C2PA compliant verification technology to include video in beta.

Sony promised that the next stage of its Camera Authenticity Solution would support the verification of video back in October when it rolled out the system to more cameras. The company has been as good as its word too, with the latest release of Camera Authenticity Solution ver.2026.1 adding support for video in beta.

It works in exactly the same way as the previous stills-only version, analysing the 3D depth information of content to verify that it was physically shot rather than generated using 3D software or AI. This verification information then stays with the content all the way through the production chain including editing.

Subscribers to the service can verify the authenticity of content at Sony’s Image Validation Site and also confirm whether editing by generative AI has been applied. This gives another potentially potent layer in the fight against fake news content. Given the sheer amount of fake video being created surrounding the current Iranian conflict, it is easy to see this only becoming more important over time.

Sony also says that for long-form videos, it offers news organisations and videographers a feature that allows the trimming of specific sections while maintaining the digital signature, reducing the verification time required.

After verifying the authenticity of still images and video taken with C2PA digital signatures through 3D Detection and Modification Analysis, a Camera Verify report can be issued to access the results of the authenticity verification. This can be accessed via its own URL.

Supported cameras

Sony's list of cameras supporting a license for video now includes the α1 II, α1, α9 III, α7R V, α7S III, α7 IV, FX3, FX30, and PXW-Z300. The α7 V is scheduled to be supported from May 2026 onward, and Sony says more camera models will be supported in due course.

There's also an important note in that only MP4 format at a bitrate of 222 Mbps or lower is supported. Video recorded in 8K and slow / quick motion footage is not supported, neither is depth verification with the PXW-Z300. This is a slightly confusing caveat: the PXW-Z300 launched in summer 2025 billed as the world's first authenticity-ready camera for video. But Sony also emphasizes that this is beta service, available for a limited time until the official release and that functionality might change.
