Wildlife shooters and others can dramatically extend their remote shooting distances with the new Wireless Tethering Hub for Cameras.
While there are probably a myriad of uses for a device that will dramatically extend the wireless control range of your camera, SmallRig is very much majoring on the wildlife photography aspects of the new Wireless Tethering Hub for Cameras. It's a repeater, basically, which allows you to use WiFi connectivity in the field and provides a dramatic improvement over the control distance that you tend to get from Bluetooth.
The diagram below isn't the clearest at first glance, but essentially it promises to provide a clear image feed when sited up to 100 metres (328 feet) away from the subject. Another hop to the control device gives you a total distance of 300 meters (984 feet) with digital and action cameras, and up to 500 meters (1640 feet) with specific DJI devices. You then just boot up the camera manufacturer's remote app (Sony’s Imaging Edge and Nikon’s SnapBridge etc - the device boasts wide camera compatibility) and you're away.
The 218 gram (7.7 oz) tether consumes 3W and runs on power banks or via a mini V-lock mount plate for battery support. A 10,000 mAh power bank will give you roughly 10 hours of use. Seven 1/4" -20 threaded holes provide plenty of mounting options. Very usefully, you can network up to five devices together to provide multi-camera coverage in the dedicated app. There is a caveat in this in that mirrorless cameras support one-to-many pairing and action cameras support one-to-one, so compatible device count varies.
Latency is listed as 0.06 seconds. And yes, it will also double as a home WiFi signal booster.
The Wireless Tethering Hub for Cameras is shipping now worldwide (and on December 29 in the US) for $149.
